The Story of Treetop Laboratory:

Every big idea has a beginning. Ours started with a curious girl.

When our oldest daughter was about eight years old, she loved to read, explore, and learn. She was independent, curious, and liked figuring things out for herself.

Those same qualities helped shape Kate.

From the beginning, we knew Kate would have a tree. At first, the tree was magical, with a mysterious character who lived inside it.

But magic shouldn’t solve problems. Kate should!

So the magic and the mysterious character disappeared. The tree became home to a treehouse laboratory where Kate could experiment, build, and figure things out.

Kate needed a friend, so she built one. And that’s how the idea of Gears began.

Then we started asking more questions: Could the stories be fun and explore real science? Could the books make kids curious enough to keep exploring, even after the story was over?

Building a Friendship is where the world of Treetop Laboratory begins.

Stay curious. There’s always more to discover.

Meet Shawn & Heather.

We ask different questions, notice different things, and both love discovering what happens.

Shawn FitzGerald

Storyteller • Creator • Curious Observer

Shawn has been making up stories since he was a kid.

He loved looking through binoculars and telescopes, learning about space, and imagining what might exist beyond the world he could see. He never stopped being curious.

As an adult, Shawn turned storytelling into a career creating videos and meeting interesting people. He discovered that everyone has a story to tell if you ask good questions and take the time to listen.

What Shawn Likes About Treetop Laboratory

“Almost anything can start with a question. You don’t have to know the answer before you begin. You can wonder about something, try an idea, discover you were wrong, and try something else. That’s how interesting discoveries can happen.”

Outside the Laboratory: Shawn likes playing music and games, traveling, exploring new places, and cats. Preferably curious ones.

Heather FitzGerald

Educator • Creator • Lifelong Learner

As a child, Heather loved discovering things.

She read lots of books, wrote skits with her brothers, collected stamps and stickers, explored her grandparents’ pine trees, and spent plenty of time outdoors.

Then she became a teacher. Heather spent years helping elementary students read, ask questions, and make their own discoveries.

Heather knows that kids view the world differently than adults do. Kids may notice something an adult missed. Mistakes can lead to better ideas. And often the best way to learn isn’t to be given the answers—it’s to try new things and see what happens.

What Heather Likes About Treetop Laboratory

“The story doesn’t have to end when you finish the book. What Kate, Tommy, or Gears discover might make you curious to learn more. That’s when the adventure becomes yours.”

Outside the Laboratory: Heather likes gardening, crafts, baking, traveling, and noticing details other people might walk right past.
